Isla normally liked to have a lie in on Sunday morning, but today she couldn’t get back to sleep even though she felt exhausted. She’d been awake half the night staring at the photo of Mum and Mr Black and wondering if Tilda was right about the ring. She reached for her phone and put on her glasses for another look. The bag was small enough for a ring box, but lots of things from a jewellers were that size. Besides, even if it was a ring, they didn’t know that it was meant for Mum. Isla felt so confused. All she really wanted was for Mum to be happy.

Isla threw on her jeans and a jumper, and headed downstairs for breakfast. Seb and Milo barrelled past her in the opposite direction, almost knocking her over. “Watch out!” she yelled after them. “Where are you going? Aren’t you supposed to be baking with Gran?”

Seb raced into Milo’s room, slamming the door behind him, but Milo paused at the top of the stairs. He glanced at Isla, then back at his bedroom door, seeming torn.

“I thought you liked baking?” said Isla.

Milo’s lip quivered slightly. “I do, but Seb said baking is boring and…”

“How about I take your place while Seb is here?” Isla offered, understanding Milo’s dilemma. “Then you can help Gran again once Seb’s gone home. But just because Seb thinks baking is boring doesn’t mean that it is boring. Not if it’s something that you enjoy. OK?”

Milo gave Isla a little smile, then raced away to his room. As Isla jumped down the last three stairs, the phone rang. Before she could answer Mum came flying out of the kitchen and snatched it out of her hand.

“It’s for me!” Mum squealed, turning her back on Isla and talking in hushed tones.

Isla edged into the kitchen, pausing behind the door so that she was out of sight. There was no sign of Gran, so she could eavesdrop without the risk of being told off. Isla knew it was wrong to snoop but she had a sneaking suspicion that Mum was talking to Mr Black and she was desperate to find out the truth. Mum had her hand cupped over the phone and was talking quietly and Isla had to strain to hear what she was saying.

“What are you doing?” Tilda demanded, sneaking up behind Isla.

Isla gave a yelp, then slapped her hand over her mouth before Mum heard. She pointed at the hallway and Tilda peered round the door.

“Don’t make it obvious that you’re listening!” Isla hissed, grabbing Tilda’s jumper to pull her back.

“I’m not listening,” Tilda said. “You are.”

“I think it’s Mr Black,” Isla explained.

Tilda opened her mouth to say something as Mum appeared in the doorway. “What are you two whispering about?” she asked, folding her arms across her chest.

“Nothing!” Isla squeaked as Tilda blurted out, “Was that Mr Black on the phone?”

Mum opened her mouth but for a moment no sound came out.
